The Long and Short of It
The Long and Short of It

For many women, hair is like their security blanket. They become attached to it and are fearful to let it go, especially when it is long. Long hair is easy to hide behind. You don’t stand out too much when you have long hair. It is comfortable for society, and therefore comfortable for most women. Long hair is somehow sexier, more feminine, prettier, and softer than short hair. Long hair is versatile. You can pull it up in a bun, throw it in a ponytail, braid it, wear pig tails (not my favorite look if you are over 10), wear it down. The list goes on and on. Really the only thing holding back long hair is the time and creativity you put into it.

I decided to cut my hair OFF when my son was born. He was really interested in my long hair. At the time, it was down to my mid-back. And no matter what I did to it, Sam would pull it. So- off it came.

This was not my first rodeo. I have been a short-hair girl before, so I knew exactly what to expect. I knew that the second the hair came off, the make-up would go on. But never being satisfied with my hair style, I knew it would be short lived- no pun intended. In fact I am what I like to call a hair yo-yo. When my hair is long, I want to cut it short, when it is short, I want to grow it out. The ever-changing hairdo.

I dare all women to cut off their hair. It is both liberating and scary at the same time. A study in sociology no doubt. Why is it that long hair makes us feel beautiful? I can only speak for myself- but my short hair never gave me the feeling of beautiful. Perhaps “cute”, maybe “sassy”, but beautiful- no. Not even really pretty. Unless I conjured up the Audrey Hepburn inside of myself. A short hair cut seems to take away all of those girly adjectives in an instant. It does however introduce a whole set of new ones, like sophisticated, sassy, powerful, and strong. It takes a woman with a lot of confidence to wear short hair.

This is not a bad thing. Ultimately, the hair thing- is all about attitude. Hair is fun. I have forever wanted to get extensions. A laborious process, but one worth the wait. Ever since I lobbed off my hair the first time, I have had a fascination with hair extensions. I have always fantasized about blue ones for some reason. One of these days, I would love to brave it out and intersperse blue hair extensions. Don’t ask me why, it is just the case. Aside from the blue, I love the fact that extensions take you instantly to a different place. A different fashion level all together. You can go from 5 inches to 20 in the matter of hours. How many men would love that?!

I have a clip-on ponytail, a scrunchy with hair around it, and several wigs. I think that hair is an important accessory to change and have fun with. I could go into a whole diatribe about the psychology behind hair and its changing, but that would ruin everything. I will say this- you can rest assured that a girl going through change will inevitably change her hair. Be it a break-up or a new job, something about the hair needs to change right along with the change.

I am now in the process of growing it out again. It was short for a solid year. During this year I had many visits to my hairstylists- which isn’t really terrible since he is so easy on the eyes- but it got quite costly. With spring on the way, I look forward to adding hair accessories to my repertoire. to the experts in how to wear your hair. And now, time for a change. I am ready to embrace my curls (which only look good when my hair is long enough to weight them down) and let them flow. Really, I just want the luxury of a pony tail. And the hair accessories.

I am at a stage of the grow out where I can just pull it back. And fortunately for me, the headband is in. My favorite hair accessory of late. I have a few and love them. They can be tricky. In fact- someone recently claimed that I had Connecticut hair. Had I not been born a Yankee from CT, I may have been offended. I was definitely taken aback. That is never really the look I am trying to achieve. But I will take it.
When my hair is long one of the best accessories I like to carry around is a set of chopsticks. This is the best way to get the hair up and out of the way at a moments notice., while looking fashionably different.
Women and their braids
Curly hair wants straight and vice versa I am in the process of growing out my hair and have been wearing a lot of headbands lately. Someone actually claimed that I had Connecticut hair. Had I not been born a Yankee from CT, I may have been offended. What are good accessories for long hair? Freestyle- pencil, chopstix, not sunglass on top of head- elastic band, silicone rubber bands… but it is all about the way you approach the style from their. Tossled, wrapping… something aside the typical ponytail. Hats- use hair with hat instead of tucking behind the head. Hat is an accessory instead of used to cover up the hair. Bandana. Accessorize with hair. How do you as a stylist feel about women with short hair? Risk taker. Fun to take chances, hair is an accessory rather than a link to their femininity. Express though other features instead of hair. Have a lot of fun in haircuts. Long hair can have fun as well- but short is experimenting and wanting to let go of society based impressions. What do you think are hair trends for the spring? Stronger bobs. Variations of bobs… stronger bangs, above the eyes. Warmer tone hair- reds turn to yellow by fall. More progressive. Natural texture, dimension, low lying wave that happens below the face rather than above. Rock n roll- progressive- undercuts will be cool have. Good indication- Gucci? Late summer- flapper pixe style. Stronger fuller top short on sides. Are blond highlights on the out? Cop out. Highlights were made to cause dimension.. which should be off the hair cut. Ease into color with highlights. Great intro to hair color and create dimension in a haircut- but used as a cop out. Don’t want to fully commit to color- will get the highlights. How do you get creative without being drastic? Starts at home. Be more interested in what you can do fr your hair rather than what a stylist can do. Spend more time talking about styling. Method of styling as opposed to hair cuts. Learn about how to style your hair. Blow dryers- movement in hair. How do I use a flat irons- curling irons. Crimping irons. Wishes that creative don’t take enough responsibility for styling. Color- changing hair on that level sublte ways cut adding fringe, changing direction of hair- changing tone of color. Best all around styling product? Shampoo and conditioner. All the build up. And product- ither enough or not too much. Too strong- hair is dry, too moist, product doesn’t come out. Dry hair or light hair- conditioner too strong, weigh hair down. Flat- too light, not enough moisture- frizzy dry untamed locks. Trendy fun- Spoil Me- humectant draws moisture into the hair. Adjust and bring curl into the hair. Everyone has different types of hair. Shine is good- light shine- work through ends or work through top. Everyone’s needs are too different to say one product. Product is an essential component to good hair. If you have Hair is needed to have balance. Feel not as beautiful and edgy- put it up, change the way you dress. Short- make up and dress up. Clothing has to follow how you wear your hair. Natural dimesnsion- find balance in your fashion- balance hair with the rest of your style.
